About DPFs
DPF problems can be complex and expensive to fix if you are not familiar with them!
In order to get the job done properly, the DPF unit must be removed from the vehicle then tested and cleaned accordingly. After cleaning it needs to be air-flow tested to ensure the DPF unit can work to an efficient level. After cleaning the DPF unit must be refitted to the vehicle and the ecu reset correctly. DPF units cannot be cleaned effectively whilst still fitted to the vehicle.
The repair work should only be trusted to experienced professionals who have the right experience and tools to complete the job. If you do not know a DPF specialist garage, we can point you to one of our trusted network partners in your local area who will remove the DPF unit from your vehicle and send it to us to test and clean. After the clean they will refit and reset the ecu and provide you with assistance in case there are any other related issues.
Things to be aware of!
By the time your DPF warning lights are permanently on or your vehicle goes into reduced power mode, your DPF will already be significantly clogged, so a “blast down the motorway” or using a DPF cleaning fuel additive at this stage will not cure the problem, in fact you may do more harm to your engine, damaging parts like the turbo and injectors. These solutions work better as routine preventative maintenance rather than repairs.
DPF systems are closely connected to other engine components e.g EGR valves, Turbo, Fuel Injectors, Sensors etc. It is important to evaluate if your DPF is blocked due to a system or component fault, or soot from normal usage. Sometimes a DPF system problem can look like a “chicken or egg” scenario i.e. because faulty engine component can cause a DPF to block prematurely, but also, a blocked DPF from normal usage can damage a component if the vehicle has been driven whilst the DPF is blocked. It is therefore important to ensure your vehicle is operating correctly before you refit a clean or new DPF.
We are aware that sometimes people are being advised to get the DPF removed. This not a good solution for most people as you will be breaking UK law by using the vehicle on public roads with the DPF removed.
Accordingly, your insurance policy and any vehicle warranty will be invalidated, not to mention that your vehicle will emit very harmful particles into the environment. Your vehicle will also fail the MOT.
